Denis Irwin backs Luke Shaw to succeed at Manchester United

Former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin is confident that Luke Shaw will go on to be a great investment for the club.

Former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin has expressed his belief that Luke Shaw will go on to be a great player for the club.

The 19-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Southampton last summer but has struggled to make an impact after being hit with hamstring and ankle problems.

Irwin is confident that Shaw will begin to repay the £28m fee that United paid for him once his injury troubles are over.

"I have no doubt he will be a great player for us in years to come," Irwin told PA Sport. "Until he gets a run of games I don't think you are going to see the quality Luke Shaw can bring to a side.

"When he gets that under his belt you will see the best of him. Hopefully he will stay injury-free for us for the rest of year and get a run of games."

The England international has started 12 games for United this term.
