Shola Ameboi insists that he can fill the void left by Demba Ba while he is out on international duty.

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has said that he can fill the void left by African Nations Cup-bound Demba Ba.

Ba, who has hit 15 goals in the league this season, has departed for the prestigious tournament, but his strike partner Ameobi has admitted that he is confident he can fill the void.

"Demba has gone so it is going to be a big opportunity for someone to step in and do a job. I am sure someone will do that and, hopefully, it will be myself and I can really get a run of games. That is something I have not had this season," Ameobi told The Sun.

"I want to get a bit of confidence, go on from there and try and get some goals. I feel good. When you are not playing too much it can get to you – thought I have always maintained my positive outlook."

Ameobi has made 317 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 71 goals.
