Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek is reportedly set to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan following Diego Carlos's Achilles rupture.

Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek is reportedly set to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal.

Steven Gerrard's side have been desperately searching for centre-back reinforcements after Diego Carlos suffered a devastating Achilles rupture last month.

The Lions' bid to replace the ex-Sevilla man has seemingly led to them considering a move for Bednarek, who has been an unused substitute in each of Southampton's last three Premier League matches.

According to The Athletic, Villa are now on the verge of concluding the signing of the Poland international on a season-long loan, beating West Ham United to his signature in the process.

Bednarek supposedly decided to join Gerrard's side over the Hammers and will undergo a deadline-day medical before his temporary switch to the West Midlands is made official.

The 26-year-old has registered seven goals and four assists in 153 appearances for Southampton since joining from Lech Poznan in 2017, including four Premier League goals last season.

Southampton have already allowed Jack Stephens to leave for Bournemouth on loan on deadline day and are reported to be trying to strike deals for Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix and Marseille's Duje Caleta-Car in the coming hours.
