Chelsea 'hijack Newcastle free transfer' for Premier League defender

Chelsea co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly before the match on April 18, 2023
    © Reuters

Chelsea have reportedly edged out Newcastle United in the race for a Premier League defender.

Despite the departure of Thiago Silva, the Blues are well stocked for central defenders with Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana all options when fit.

However, if reports are to be believed, Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital are determined to cash in on academy graduate Chalobah.

Not only would selling the 24-year-old raise important revenue in Chelsea's bid to pass the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), it would give them the opportunity to find a cheaper alternative.

    © Reuters

A key Liverpool man has admitted that there is logic to rumours that he could depart the Reds in the near future but has insisted that he is not looking to leave any time soon.

Since making the move from RB Leipzig in 2021, Ibrahima Konate has slowly bumped Joel Matip down the pecking order to the point that the Frenchman will leave when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Injuries have not helped the Frenchman, who has also faced competition from Jarell Quansah in recent months, but he is generally Virgil van Dijk's first-choice centre-back partner when fully fit.

Konate - who is currently preparing for Euro 2024 with the France squad - still has two seasons left to run on his Reds deal, although he is yet to sign an extension since touching down on Merseyside three years ago.

Will Jadon Sancho play for Manchester United again?

Manchester United attacker Jadon Sancho on July 22, 2023
    © Reuters

Jadon Sancho's career is at a crossroads, with the Manchester United and England forward unsure where he will be playing his football next season.

The 24-year-old has a contract at Old Trafford until June 2026, so unless a summer transfer or another loan can be agreed, he will be back with the 20-time English champions for the 2024-25 campaign.

That, as it stands, would mean a reunion with Erik ten Hag, as the Dutchman remains in control of the Red Devils despite the widespread speculation surrounding his future.

A decision on Ten Hag is yet to be made, with Man United weighing up all options before deciding whether to replace the FA Cup-winning head coach this summer.

Manchester United are expected to move for a new left-back during this summer's transfer window due to concerns over Luke Shaw's injury problems.

Shaw was restricted to just 15 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2023-24 campaign due to fitness issues, and the club are said to be worried about his time in the treatment room.

Tyrell Malacia, meanwhile, did not feature at all during the recent season due to a knee problem which has required two separate operations.

As a result, a new left-back is expected to be a priority for the 20-time English champions this summer, and with that in mind, Sports Mole identifies three players who could potentially join the club.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag claimed that Casemiro was not at 100% for the final, which led to him pulling out of the squad shortly before kickoff, but according to GOAL, the midfielder was hurt that he was not named in the starting side against the English champions.

The report claims that Casemiro was simply overlooked, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez instead being selected in the middle of the defence, while Sofyan Amrabat featured in central midfield.

    © Reuters

One of Tottenham Hotspur's fringe players is reportedly at the centre of a transfer tussle between a pair of European heavyweights ahead of the summer window.

Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was one of the first names on the Lilywhites team sheet under Antonio Conte, but the arrival of Ange Postecoglou led to a downturn in fortunes.

With the Australian favouring the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr in the engine room, Hojbjerg only made eight Premier League starts, appearing as a substitute in a further 28 matches.

The former Bayern Munich man is still under the same terms he penned upon his arrival from Southampton in 2020, and unless he pens a renewal, he can leave the club for nothing at the end of next season.
