The game started at a frantic pace and inside the opening five minutes both Tim Hoogland for Schalke and Leon Andreasen for the hosts had come close with drives from distance.

In the 14th minute Benedikt Howedes brought down Mame Biram Diouf in the box and, being the last man, was sent from the pitch.

It was Szabolcs Huszti who stepped up to take the kick and he made no mistake with his finish into the bottom corner.

The game turned a little sour following the goal, with a number of fouls from both sides.

Three minutes before the end of the opening 45, Huszti and Diouf's roles were reversed, with the former finding the latter from a corner to double Hannover's lead.

Schalke started the second half brightly and they pulled one back on 55, with Adam Szalai finishing following a Roman Neustadter through-ball.

Huszti was sent off for a dangerous foul on 74 minutes but it was not 10 men each for long as Christian Fuchs was handed his second yellow and sent off 10 minutes later.
